FAQs

Getting started

Am I responsible for any early termination fees (ETFs)?

The majority of supply plans do not have early termination fees, but occasionally some do. Arbor offers reimbursement on all early termination fees. If you're on a supply rate plan initiated through Arbor and cancel for any reason before the end of the term, we'll reimburse you for any early termination fee incurred. If a rate plan through Arbor has an early termination fee, this will be noted in the plan details on your Arbor dashboard. All you need to do is send us the early termination fee bill from the supplier and we'll reimburse the full amount.

Are there any hidden fees or sign up charges?

No! With Arbor there are no hidden fees. We aim to keep everything as transparent and easy to understand as possible.

Do I still pay my local utility provider?

Yes. If you do switch to a competitive supplier, you'll still only receive one bill from your utility provider, but you'll see the new supplier's name and lower rate in the supply section of your bill.

How can I find my current electricity supply rate?

You can find your current electricity rate on your utility bill, under the "Supply" or "Generation" section. Most people are on the default utility service rate, but if you have switched to a competitive supplier, your rate may be different. When you link your utility account to Arbor with the credentials for your online utility account, we automatically monitor your supply rate each month.

How does Arbor make money?

If you switch to a new supply rate through us, one of our energy supply partners gets a new customer and pays us a referral fee from their marketing budget. Because we connect suppliers with so many customers at a low cost, they can pass on those savings to you as lower rates. We never sell your data and we only get paid when you are switched to a new rate.

Our energy supply partners pay us so you don't have to!

I don’t know my login details for my utility. How can I find that?

First, create an online account with the utility company in your area by visiting their website. If you encounter any difficulties, please don't hesitate to reach out to our support team at support@joinarbor.com. We will be happy to assist you with the account creation process. Alternatively, you can upload a bill or manually enter your utility account information and current electric supply rate.

Is Arbor a supplier?

No, we're not a supplier. Arbor is an app that just finds and secures lower supply rates for you. We compare rates from competitive suppliers to find better rates for our users. When you sign up and link your utility account, we will see if a better competitive supply rate is available than what you currently pay. If your electric supply rate is better than competitive rates available, we'll continue to monitor the market and let you know when we've found a better rate.

What does this mean: Is 'utility' listed as your Supplier?

Check the "supply" or "generation" section of your utility bill to see which company is listed as your supplier. If you have not switched to a competitive supplier before, your supplier will typically be your utility, so you can answer "yes" to this question.

What happens if I opt-out of Autopilot?

At Arbor, we believe in providing our customers with transparency and choice. If you turn off Autopilot, instead of automatically securing a better rate when we find one, we will just notify you that a better rate is available. As the market for rates is ever-changing, it is advisable to act promptly upon receiving information about a rate that you deem favorable. We will be here to help you every step of the way.

What is Arbor?

Arbor is an app that lowers the price you pay for electricity. In states with deregulated electricity markets (13 states in the NE, Midwest, and Texas), you are able to choose an alternative electricity supply plan without changing your utility company. Most people don't know this, so they stick with the default supply plan provided by their utility company which may not be as low as other competitive supply plans available.

Arbor finds and secures lower rates for you, and is available to renters and homeowners. You pay your same usual bill to your utility, but with a lower rate.

What is Autopilot?

Autopilot is a feature we provide that continuously monitors the energy markets for a better electric supply rate than your current plan. If you're on Autopilot with Arbor, we'll automatically secure a new rate on your behalf and notify you. If you don't opt-out, you'll see your new fixed-rate on your utility bill within 1-2 billing cycles. There are no hidden fees and there is no interruption to your reliable utility service. If you'd rather be more hands on, simply leave Autopilot off - we'll still notify you when we find a better rate, but we won't request the new rate until you approve it.

Who can sign up for Arbor?

Anyone who pays an electricity bill can sign up for Arbor, as long as they live in an area with competitive electricity markets. This includes CT, DE, IL, MA, MD, ME, NH, NJ, NY, OH, PA, RI, and Washington DC. Within those territories, some areas are served by utilities that do not allow competitive energy rates. Enter your zip code on our website to see if we are available in your utility area.

Why do I need to link my utility account?

Linking your utility account is a secure and convenient way to share your utility bill data with us, so that we can analyze and stay up to date on how much you are paying for energy, how much energy you use, and where your energy comes from. This allows you to rest easy knowing Arbor is utilizing your current data to find a better rate. We can also share personalized insights and recommendations on more ways to save. In addition to providing your utility credentials, you may manually enter your utility account information.

Why is my utility account not linking?

Utility account linking can fail for a number of reasons. The most common reason is that the login credentials provided are invalid. Other reasons include the utility website being down, or the utility having security blockers like multi-factor authentication. If utility linking fails more than once, we recommend you simply manually enter your utility account information. If you still have questions, please reach out to support@joinarbor.com.

Will I have to get a new meter or buy any new equipment?

Absolutely not! Switching your supply rate is completely seamless—no new equipment, no installation appointments, no hassle. You get the same reliable electricity through the same utility lines, pay the same utility bill, just with a better supply rate that saves you money. We take care of the complex stuff so you can spend your energy on what matters, not on understanding energy markets.

Will I lose power?

No, Arbor does not impact your energy reliability and your relationship with your energy provider remains unchanged. If you have questions or concerns about your electricity service generally, you should contact your utility.
