First Choice Power is a retail electricity provider (REP) that has been supplying electricity to Texas residents for over 70 years. First Choice Power is a subsidiary of Direct Energy – one of the largest retail electricity and natural gas providers in the United States. Here’s everything you need to know about First Choice Power, along with their rates, energy plans, and pricing.
First Choice Power serves the people of Texas in the service area of five utility companies:
Oncor Electric Delivery: Oncor’s service area includes Dallas, Waco, and Killeen and the surrounding areas.
CenterPoint Energy: Their service area mainly covers the Houston metropolitan area.
Texas-New Mexico Power: TNMP services several parts of the Houston, Midland, and Dallas-Fort Worth areas.
AEP Texas Central: Their service area includes Laredo, McAllen, and Corpus Christi.
AEP Texas North: AEP Texas North covers most of Northern Texas, including Abilene and San Angelo, among other cities.
You can find all First Choice Power energy plans in every utility company’s service area.
First Choice Power offers a wide range of electricity plans.
The following are five types of energy plans all First Choice Power customers can choose from:
Fixed-Rate Plans: Fixed-rate plans let you pay the same amount throughout your electric plan. The plan length can be for 6, 12, or 24-months. We recommend fixed-rate plans because they provide price certainty and minimize risk. But be careful: when your term expires, your rate becomes variable and can go up without notice. Arbor automatically keeps you on the best fixed-rate plan, so you don’t have to worry about rate hikes at the end of your term.
Prepaid Plans: Prepaid plans (Power-To-Go) let you have month-to-month flexibility. There is no cancellation fee or any hidden costs or charges. You don’t need credit checks or deposits to opt for a prepaid plan.
Month-to-Month Plans: Such plans don’t have any long-term contract, and there are no early termination fees.
Time of Use + Free Weekends Plans: These plans can get you up to 48-hours of free electricity each week. You don’t need any credit checks or deposit, and you can pay as you go.
Green Energy Plans: You can opt for green energy plans that supply electricity generated from renewable sources. Renewable energy is generated through wind and solar sources.
Some plans may ask you for a deposit. However, plans available through Arbor never require a deposit.
While you can find most of the plan information on the energy company’s website, it’s best to read the plan’s Electricity Facts Label (EFL). It contains additional information on each plan, including the following:
Price per kilowatt-hour (kWh) depending on energy usage
Early termination fees
Percentage of renewable energy sourcing
You can switch to different energy plans without any hassle. Other charges on your electricity bill include your local TDSP or TDU charges. TDU (utility company) charges include the cost of delivering electricity, maintaining power lines, and handling power outages.
First Choice Power offers various features and incentives, including the following:
Prepaid electricity plans
Auto-bill pay services
Online account and mobile bill pay services using debit/credit cards or your bank account
Mobile app for both iOS and Android devices
Usage alerts via text and email

You can make your First Choice Power account to manage your plans online.
The Texas energy market is massive and has several electricity providers. Choosing any single energy provider depends on what energy plans and rates are available.
All electric companies offer various energy plans with different rates, and it can be hard to choose any single plan. You can search and try to shop for rates yourself, but watch out for the fine print, hidden fees, and escalating rates once your term ends.
You can use Arbor’s free TrueRate Protection service to automatically find and switch to the best First Choice Power electricity rates in your area.
Arbor scans the market and gives you the best rates you can get in your service area. When your contract term is expiring, Arbor finds the best rate and switches you again. You always pay the best rate and never have to worry about overpaying for electricity ever again.

Generally, First Choice Power is known for providing one of the best online services in Texas. Most customers praise their online bill pay service, customer service, and alert system. On the other hand, general customer service isn’t as good, and the company is yet to be officially BBB accredited.
