New York State Electric and Gas (NYSEG) is a subsidiary of Avangrid – a subsidiary of Iberdrola. Avangrid is one of the major energy services and delivery utility companies in the United States, serving the state of New York and New England. Other subsidiaries of the company include Rochester Gas and Electric Corporation (RG&E), Berkshire Gas Corporation, and Central Maine Power, among others.
New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) has electric and natural gas customers from upstate New York to Ithaca and Binghamton. The company has over 36,000 miles of power lines (distribution and transmission lines) and 7,800 miles of gas distribution lines. In total, NYSEG serves over 1.1 million New Yorkers.
Here’s how NYSEG’s payment system works and everything you need to know about their rates.
All NYSEG customers, including both gas and electricity customers, are free to choose who supplies their electricity. While NYSEG delivers energy, you can choose among different energy suppliers.
The Public Service Commission regulates the standard rates offered by NYSEG. For electricity, it’s the Price to Compare, and for natural gas, it’s the Standard Choice Offer. Customers can compare these with the rates and plans offered by other suppliers and make an informed decision.
You can choose among energy suppliers such as Clearview Energy, Verde Energy, and Public Power, among others. Each of them provides different plans and rates – some of them may offer renewable energy for people who want greener energy.

There are six ways to pay your NYSEG energy bill. You can change your payment method at any time.
Online: You can pay your NYSEG energy bill online by signing in with your account. You can use your bank account or pay using a credit/debit card. There are no additional fees for using credit cards.
Pay Using App: If you set up the NYSEG app, you can access and pay your bill with the click of a button at any time and from anywhere.
AutoPay: You can enroll in AutoPay, and your monthly bill will automatically be deducted from your bank account each month. You can even schedule payments using the eBill service.
In-Person: You can pay your bill in-person at an office location, use one of the approved pay agents, or pay at a Walmart or Kmart nationwide. However, keep in mind that some in-person payment locations may be temporarily unavailable due to COVID-19.
Pay by Mail: You can mail your check or money order. You can also enclose a check or money order, payment stub, and your billing statement in a return envelope.
Pay by Phone: You can call and pay your bill using the automated phone system.

Home Energy Assistance Program: HEAP helps low-income households pay for energy and weatherization costs. Keep in mind that HEAP is a federal program and has limited funding, so it’s best to apply as soon as possible. You can learn more here.

One Less Worry: If you or any household member is hospitalized, you can put your bill on hold for 30 days with one call.
NYSEG Smart Solutions: You can buy and install energy efficiency upgrades for your home. You can receive partial rebates on some upgrades. You can learn more here.

Follow these steps to set up your new account.
Click on this link to start your account setup and enter your NYSEG account number. The account number can be found on your billing statement.
You then have to enter your details, including your full name, date of birth, contact information, email address, username, and password.
You will then be prompted to enter your preferences.
You can also choose to set up online billing.
After you’re done, your account will be set up and you can register for the additional services.
